Dorm Shopping: Bathroom Edition

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Schick®. The opinions and text are all mine.

So you’re all ready for college – you’ve got your decor chosen (with help from the dorm style guide, of course!) and your school supplies sorted. You’re ready for class, you’re ready for life, and you’re totally ready for this new step in your life, and guess what? I’m super proud of you! Which might not mean a lot coming from a random stranger on the internet, but still. Be proud of yourself. But dorm life can be… Less than glamorous, especially when communal bathrooms are involved. I could tell you twenty horror stories from my time in the dorms, but rather than terrify you, I figure it’s best to help you be prepared for everything sharing a bathroom might throw at you. And of course, I’m going to bring you a great deal and fantastic sweepstakes from Schick to boot, so grab a pen and paper, because you might just want to make a shopping list.

Dorm Shopping: Bathroom Edition

Bulk is Your Friend

This is my rule of thumb for anything hygiene-related, because you never want to be caught without something you need. This means those giant economy bottles and multipacks are your best friends. Go for the huge bottles of shampoo and conditioner. They may be more expensive upfront, but they’re a better value, and you’re less likely to run out the day you need it most. If you can, avoid pump tops – they’ll waste all the product on the bottom and sides of the bottle if you’re not careful! You’re going to want more than one toothbrush. Dorm living, unfortunately, lends itself to illness, and you don’t want to keep reinfecting yourself with an old toothbrush!

Be Thrifty

Thinking about my student loans accounts for at least 20% of my anxiety (I’m an anxious person). Save money where you can. If you can buy generic for comparable quality, do it. There are some things I don’t skimp on, though – body and face washes, which are essential to good skin; conditioner, because my hair can get so dry and frizzy; and razors, which are literal knives I rub against my skin on the daily. I manage to save on those by relying on disposable razors, actually. My faves are Schick Quattro, and I can get four disposable razors for less than the cost of four blades.

Buying disposable razors in multipacks means being thrifty and buying in bulk - two great strategies for saving money.

But we’re all way too savvy to save only two or three bucks, so I’m partnering with Schick to bring you this awesome coupon, which will let you buy one pack of Schick disposable razors and get another free at Walmart – which is pretty much the best deal ever if you’re a fan of silky-smooth legs and free stuff (i.e. everyone). Still stressing about student loans? Snap a selfie and tag it #SchickSelfieSweeps and enter the Summer Selfie Sweepstakes, and you could win $10,000 towards your tuition, plus other great stuff. I wish you guys the best of luck!

Protect Everything

In all ways possible. Unfortunately, theft can be an issue in shared spaces, so keep a close eye on your stuff when you’re in the bathroom, and never leave anything you couldn’t bear to lose out of sight. Specifically, please don’t leave your cell phone in the pocket of your robe while you shower. Shared restrooms also tend to get kind of gross, so keep everything clean. Get a cover for your toothbrush, never put anything you’re going to put in your mouth on a counter, and keep track of the blade cover that comes with your razors. Get a pair of flip-flops or shower shoes, and please, please, please don’t be the one to walk barefoot in the restrooms.

Stay Portable

You’re going to want low-maintenance, easy-to-use and easy-to-move products. This means that face masks or other products that require lots of heating or mixing might not be good for daily use. I wish, my freshman year, I’d thought to grab a pack of small bottles to fill with shampoo, conditioner, body-, and face wash to save space when travelling. I also love shower caddies with removable centers – check out mine below. You can pull only the center section to take when you’re not showering, which means your toothpaste, toothbrush, face wash, and any other necessities for getting ready can stay off the gross counter without taking up tons of space.

The clear plastic center of this caddy lifts out on its own, making it perfect for brushing your teeth and washing your face before bed!

And those are my necessities! I’d feel bad if I didn’t say this, so please, for the sake of your floormates, never leave a mess you made behind, clear the drain of your hair (it’s even grosser to other people), and respect other people’s space. You follow that simple advice, and you’ll be just fine! If you’re headed to Walmart for your shopping, don’t forget your Schick disposable razor BOGO coupon, and if you want a chance to with $10,000, try out the Schick Selfie Sweeps! You’d better believe I’ll be doing it… Just as soon as I can take a decent selfie!

What are your must-haves for dorm life? Anything you wish you’d known about sharing bathrooms before you moved in?
